Is MyLife legit and safe?

Reviewed July 26, 2026

Short answer

MyLife is a real company, but it has the worst regulatory record of any people-search site we cover. In December 2021 a court ordered MyLife.com and its chief executive to pay $21 million and banned them from deceptive negative-option marketing, after the FTC and Department of Justice alleged it lured people into auto-renewing subscriptions with background reports that implied criminal and sex-offender records the reports did not actually contain. Its opt-out works, but it is slower than most.

Is MyLife a scam?

Not a scam in the legal sense - it is an operating business - but of everything on this list, MyLife is the one where the complaints most closely resemble the government's own findings. The FTC's case was specifically about misleading people into paying and making the subscription hard to escape. Remove your data for free and do not subscribe to see what it holds on you.

What MyLife actually is

MyLife publishes a profile page per person combining public records with a proprietary numeric "Reputation Score" that its own chief executive created. The score has no external validation and no defined methodology you can inspect, but it appears on your page as though it means something, which is what made it effective at persuading people to pay to see their own listing.

Where MyLife gets your data

Public records and purchased commercial data, in the usual pattern for this industry. What distinguishes MyLife is less the sourcing than the presentation: the FTC alleged its reports were marketed as though they might reveal arrests, criminal history, or sex-offender status on a named person even when they held no such records.

Is it legal?

MyLife presents itself as an informational service rather than a consumer reporting agency. The government disagreed. The July 2020 complaint alleged MyLife in fact operated as a consumer reporting agency and violated the Fair Credit Reporting Act by failing to maintain reasonable procedures to verify how its reports would be used, to ensure accuracy, and to limit them to legally permissible purposes. It also alleged its billing violated the Restore Online Shoppers' Confidence Act.

What MyLife exposes about you

  • Full name and age
  • Current and past addresses
  • Phone numbers
  • A Reputation Score and Reputation Profile
  • Relatives and associates

The real risks

  • A meaningless "Reputation Score" attached to your name, which readers may take at face value.
  • Report marketing that the FTC alleged implied criminal or sex-offender records where none existed.
  • Removal takes noticeably longer here than at comparable sites, typically around two weeks.
  • A documented history of subscription practices a court has now banned, so read any checkout page carefully.

MyLife's public record

July 2020

The Department of Justice, on the FTC's behalf, sued MyLife.com and chief executive Jeffrey Tinsley. The complaint alleged MyLife claimed its background reports on a named person "may contain" arrest, criminal and sexual-offender records even when they contained none, to push people into auto-renewing premium subscriptions, and that MyLife operated as a consumer reporting agency in violation of the FCRA.

December 2021

A court approved an order requiring MyLife.com and Tinsley to pay $21 million for consumer redress and banning them from deceptive negative-option marketing. It is the largest consumer-redress figure among the people-search sites we cover.

What to do about it

You can remove yourself for free, and you do not need a reason. Our step-by-step MyLife opt-out guide covers the current process - about 10 minutes, no payment, and no account needed in most cases. Expect to repeat it every few months, because these listings rebuild from public records. If you would rather see which sites list you before starting, the free exposure scan checks the major brokers, known breaches, and public profiles tied to your username without storing anything.

MyLife questions

Is MyLife legit?

It is a real business, and its free opt-out works. It is also the people-search site with the most serious regulatory history we found: a $21 million order in December 2021 and a ban on deceptive negative-option marketing, following FTC and DOJ allegations about misleading background-report marketing and hard-to-cancel subscriptions.

Is the MyLife Reputation Score real?

It is real in the sense that MyLife displays it. It is not a recognised or externally validated measure of anything - the FTC's complaint noted the score was created by the company's own chief executive. Treat it as a marketing device attached to your name, not an assessment of you.

Why does MyLife want me to pay to see my own information?

That business model is precisely what the FTC challenged. You should never need to pay to see or remove your own listing, and you do not: the opt-out is free. If you find yourself on a checkout page while trying to remove your data, you have taken a wrong turn.

How long does MyLife take to remove my profile?

Longer than most - typically around fifteen days, though sometimes faster. Submit the request, keep the confirmation, and re-check after two weeks rather than assuming it failed at day three.

Don't want to do this 62+ times?

Opting out one broker at a time works, but there are dozens of them and many relist you after a few months. A removal service files and re-files these requests for you across the whole industry.
